KERF:

A MEASUREMENT OF THE WIDTH OF A CUT CHAINMAILLE RING. MY CHAINMAILLE CUTTING BLADES ARE 0.006" - 0.01" THICK.


BURR:

A SMALL PIECE OF METAL JUTTING OUT FROM WHERE THE RING IS CUT. MOST BURRS CAN BE REMOVED WITH TUMBLING.

SPRINGBACK:

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE ACTUAL I.D. OF THE RING AND THE MANDREL DIAMETER. AS THE I.D. INCREASES, THE SPRINGBACK INCREASES. NEGATIVE SPRINGBACK IS POSSIBLE, BUT USUALLY ONLY WITH SOFT METALS LIKE COPPER.

AR (ASPECT RATIO):

THE ACTUAL I.D. OF A RING DIVIDED BY THE WIRE DIAMETER OF THE SAME RING.


I.D. (INSIDE DIAMETER):

THE I.D. IS BEST MEASURED WITH CALIPERS. MY RINGS ARE MEASURED BEFORE THEY ARE CLOSED.


WD (WIRE DIAMETER):

THE WD IS BEST MEASURED WITH A MICROMETER.

HELIX (HELICES):

A HELIX IS THE MATHEMATICAL TERM FOR A COIL. IT DESCRIBES A RING THAT HAS NOT BEEN CLOSED. THE PICTURE AT THE LEFT IS A LEFT HANDED HELIX. A RING THAT IS CLOSED IS CALLED A TORUS (TORII).


TORSION:

THE MEASURED CURVE OR ARC IN A HELIX AS IT SPIRALS OFF THE 2 DIMENSIONAL PLANE INTO 3 DIMENSIONAL SPACE. THE LARGER THE TORSION VALUE THE FURTHER FROM A TRUE CIRCLE THE RING BECOMES. THE TORSION VALUE WILL TELL YOU HOW MUCH YOUR PROJECT WILL SPIN (NOT HANG STRAIGHT). THE TORSION VALUE IS THE INVERSE OF THE AR VALUE. THE SMALLER THE AR, THE HIGHER THE TORSION.

SPIN:

THE TOTAL ADDED EFFECT OF RING TORSION ON A CHAINMAILLE PROJECT. IF YOU USE RINGS WITH RIGHT HANDED TORSION, YOUR PROJECT WILL HAVE RIGHT SPIN. THIS EFFECT IS VERY EVIDENT ON PROJECTS OVER 20" LONG. THE TIGHTER THE PROJECT, THE MORE SPIN IT WILL HAVE. THE LOWER THE AR, THE MORE SPIN A PROJECT WILL HAVE.

*NOTE: YOU CANNOT BEND A CHAINMAILLE RING PERFECTLY STRAIGHT. ALL CHAINMAILLE RINGS MADE FROM COILS ARE HELICES, NOT PERFECT CIRCLES. CLOSING A RING DOES NOT MAKE THE RING A PERFECT CIRCLE. THE TINIEST OFFSET IN A RING WILL STILL CREATE SPIN IN A LARGE PROJECT BECAUSE WE USE THOUSANDS OF RINGS IN THESE LARGE PROJECTS.

BY INTERLACING RINGS WITH OPPOSITE HANDEDNESS, YOUR PROJECT CAN HAVE A TOTAL OF 0 SPIN. USING RINGS THAT ARE CAST, LIKE RUBBER RINGS, CAN HELP REDUCE SPIN ALSO.
